Fawn Island 2008 Trip I, Part III

I may not know what Ian did, but his mama has given me that look before… somebody’s in trouble! 😉 See this image larger.

Ian’s outfit for the fourth of July… I like that pose, kiddo, the catwalk is not ready for you! See this image larger.

The temperature was perfect outside, time for a swim! Maybe you could bring a toy or twelve, little man! See this image larger.

Ian decides he could look just a little cooler with Dada’s sunglasses on! See this image larger.

A great time was had by all, but I think we all know who had the most fun. See this image larger.

“Go inside?!? Awww.” See this image larger.

The morning of the fourth of July and Ian awakes with a smile and some breakfast! See this image larger.

Taking Ian for a spin! See this image larger.

Gp Dave always wonders if Ian remembers him between visits. Something about this smile tells me that he does. “I’m sneakin’ up on Grampa!” See this image larger.

“Surprise!” See this image larger.

Sometimes he can be so serious too. Just keep in mind if he didn’t have his serious moments, we should probably be more worried than if he didn’t. See this image larger.

That’s just the morning of the fourth of July! Continues tomorrow!

Fawn Island 2008 Trip I, Part I

Sorry about the delays, folks, as I mentioned in the Twitter area of the site, work piled up and it was a short week after we got back from the break! (Hopefully you all got your Ian fix by watching the Ian DVD?)

Friday, July 3rd marked our return to Canadian waters, and as 8 months or so had passed since Ian’s last visit, we were wondering how much he would remember. Parts of Fawn Island, I know he remembers, but not many. The cottage ottomans, in particular. As far as people go, Grandpa Dave got a wave from across the parking lot the moment Ian was lifted from his car seat. Grandma Marcia got a smile and a wave from the boat as we neared the cottage.

Not all of the story can be told in pictures despite the great many that were taken. Here’s a quick rundown of some fun things that happened and then I’ll get to the images.

• The first thing Ian did was pick up a great big ball on the deck, and run into a post with it. He bounced, (ball hit the post, not his face) fell on his bum, and rolled onto his back. He still had his life jacket on, so there wasn’t so much as a whimper, and he was up and back at it in no time.

• Ian learned to knock on doors. What started as kind of a funny quest to see if he could pull it off, turned into a running joke throughout the trip. Grandpa Dave started it by heading to he and Marcia’s room to grab something. Ian followed Grandpa but was cut off by the door. He stood there looking, kind of perplexed. After being shown an example, he immediately used his knuckles and knocked properly. It was very cool.

• Ian did his best to work his way through a screen door at the cottage, kind of pulling it out of the door in the process. The cottage got its revenge by bonking him with a table near his right eye. This counts as a tie, and both were easily remedied with a little time.

• As I mentioned in one of the twitter stories, one day during the trip we were watching the Olympic discus tryouts, and after about two tries on the screen, Ian stood up and spun around in a circle as if he too were trying out. It was more hilarious than I can convey in words.

Two more parts to come for our first Fawn Island trip of the year!

Fresh from our trip, we made our way to the cottage. Ian may not look all that happy at the moment, but suffice to say b-o-a-t-r-i-d-e ended up having to be spelled instead of spoken! He loved it and demanded more! See this image larger.

Although he was blown away by the number of available ball-toys to play with, particularly the set of five that each did something wacky, Ian focused on the green and yellow one you see in his hand. Look for it in many other pictures during this trip! Here Gm Marcia shows him one of the other very cool toys! See this image larger.

Happy as a clam so long as he’s got a toy ball in his hands! (There’s that green and yellow one again, see? See this image larger.

Gp Dave tries to explain the importance of sharing, but Ian tries to escape through a loophole… “If one of the balls is on my head, I am technically no longer playing with it, thus I do not have one to share.” See this image larger.

Corny Kid

Last day before our holiday trip!

07/02/08 Daycare Report

Ian had a great day! He played outside with the bikes. He loves pushing them around. He bubble painted w/ star cookie cutters. He also enjoyed circle time.

And here’s what happened today that was funny:

Just two nights ago Mama tried to get Ian to eat corn on the cob from the cob. Sure he eats corn, but it didn’t surprise me at all that he needed the corn chopped off the cob. So we were surprised that tonight Ian actually seemed to sink his teeth into the corn a bit… tentatively at first! See this image larger.

But then he got a little taste of it, and started really digging in! Alternate caption. See this image larger.

In fact, poor Mama had really just planned on giving him a little bit of her obviously adult-sized portion of corn, but Ian ate the whole thing, just like a little expert! See this image larger.

Yesterday I mentioned the Sandpiper family that skitters around the house…
You can see mama bird off to the left there and two of the three babies under our tree. The other is off to the right of where this shot is cropped. See this image larger.

July Already?

We’re getting ready and packing for our big Fawn Island trip — it’ll be a doozy. The 3rd through the 7th! I’ll try to take video and pictures as much as possible!

07/01/08 Daycare Report

Ian had a great day! He got to go to the park and play on the slides and swings. He enjoyed singing songs during circle time. He would stand up and dance to our snacks. [I think they meant songs, there.] He loved our 4th of July Sparkler Snack.[I’m going to go ahead and assume there were no pyrotechnics involved.]

What’s Cookin?

Ian now has access to the kitchen. He’s causing a lot of headaches, but his boundaries should be expanded, we should always be challenging our reliance on what is convenient, and frankly he’s got to learn “no” sooner or later. We’ve had to make some modifications, of course, and will always have to keep an eye on him; but hey, that’s parenting for you. Some of the new fun includes: the trashcan, the buttons on the dishwasher, the knobs on the gas stove, the stove, the fridge, and the cat’s food. I admit readily to shutting him back out of the kitchen a few times, kind of giving up on the advancement, but Mama’s been patient with him and is helping me cope.

Ian continues to develop… he climbs on anything he can, will use anything you hand to him as a tool… (The recent “stand on wipes package to try to reach the screen front door handle” incident comes to mind) and you can tell there’s a lot more going on behind those eyes. Feelings get hurt, decisions get made and then ignored, things learned or seen previously are rekindled.

06/27/08 Daycare Report:

Ian had a great day! He had a blast playing in the water table outside this morning. He also helped decorate a card for Miss Amber.

Not sure if I told you we had a sandpiper nest under our tree… well, it is gone, and three little babies have been hopping around the yard; they’re adorable. Most of the family thinks they’re cute, aside from Seth who refers to them as “the three piece McNugget meal.”

Random picture from the other night:
Melissa snapped this shot while Ian was dozing away. He’s still our little baby even though he’s a big ol’ toddler. See this image larger.

Twice Bitten, Once Shy

We got two incident reports today from daycare. The first was at 10:05am…

Ian was playing with the lawnmower [presumedly a toy] and another child wanted his toy. The other child got upset and bit Ian on his left arm.

The second was at 11:00am…

Another child was pushing him out of the way and Ian didn’t want to move. So the child bit him on his left wrist.

I notice we don’t get the name or gender of the other child. I’m wondering what his/her incident report says. I’m guessing something along the lines of “Your child bit another child twice, deserved kick in shin, received.”

Note the difference between an incident report and a daily report. Incident reports are for when Ian has an accident or hurts himself in some way. Daily reports are a simple update on how his day went. I think in the future I’ll be typing in his daily reports here on the blog; they’re probably good to keep track of in a database like this one anyway.

Today’s Daily Report — “Ian had a great day… …He is doing a lot better interacting with the other children.” (This is the day he got bit, lol)

In other news:
• Ian woke up the other morning, held his arms up for Mama to pick him up, plucked the zooey (pacifier) out of his mouth, and handed it to her. (As in: “Done with this for now, thanks.”)

• When I picked Ian up from daycare yesterday, I sat him down on the floor of the car. I showed him how he could climb up to the seat of the car, and then his infant car seat as a series of steps. I mean sure, he’d made it from the car’s rear seat up onto his infant car seat previously, but to make it in a couple steps, that’d be impressive, right? Well he skipped the middle-step and clambered up from the car floor into the infant car seat!

Dance!

Some random updates for you:

• Ladies and gentlemen, video footage of Ian dancing!!! Click here to see very short video!

New Feature! On the right in the “sidebar” of the page where you’re reading this, there’s a new section called “Twitter/Live.” It should be somewhat up-to-date with the latest and greatest news if we’re on the road. Believe it or not, I can make an update to that area of the site with my mobile phone! So I just type it in, send away, and (boom) there’s an update! It’s also just easier in general to update via Twitter, so expect to see some tidbits there if you don’t see an entry here.

• Today Ian and I were watching an excellent children’s film called Kiki’s Delivery Service. It is the story of a very friendly witch, who has a cat that she can talk to, and how she comes of age. It’s a very charming movie, on the level of Disney animation. At any rate, we’ve seen this movie about 6 times with Ian at least, but this time in particular Kiki’s cat Gigi was cracking Ian up like crazy. I think it is the first time I’ve seen him really react to what’s on the tube instead of just staring at it blankly.

• It is with a small bit of sadness that I announce the retirement of bathtub duck. Ian has finally just gotten to be too big. Our little baby’s a boy! It happens so fast.

• During today’s Dada/Ian Monday, Ian found an old toy of his under the couch, and played with it a bit. Here’s some pics:

We had a lot of fun, but it was funny to see how large he is compared to this toy. See this image larger.

He used to kind of lay there in it staring up or down… now he can run around the house dragging it in tow. See this image larger.

• One final word, if you weren’t already handed a copy of Ian’s Greatest Hits Vol II & III you should be getting yours in the week(s) to come; production is finalized, covers and inserts printed, done, done, done. (I seem to have an extra “Volume III” disc… I might have just made a back-up, but let me know if yours is missing in the case… either scenario is pretty possible.)

The cover to II&III’s case uses this imagery… You’ll never know that my socks were stuffed into the hat to make it look full… unless I told you. 😉 See this image larger.

S’more Text

Well, I bombed you with images the last few days, here’s some stories!

• Ian and I have this game where we run around the couch that sits in the center of our living room. First we run around for awhile and he laughs, that’s pretty typical. Now I’ll switch direction and act like he scared me, scream “Ahhhh!” and turn around… well, he’s smart enough to know to turn around too! So we meet again shortly, again with the scream, and so on.

• Ian high-fives and waves with increasing frequency.

• We got our first incident report for Ian last week from his new daycare. Loosely, it said “Ian went face-first down the slide and ran into a toy truck.” He ended up with a bit of a black eye, but not much of one. On a related note: I bought a shirt for him, I think before he was even born… it’s still too big… but it says “I do all my own stunts.”

• I think as much of a Mama’s boy as Ian has been, we’ve had some serious bonding time lately because of Melissa’s work schedule. Things return back to normal shortly, and we’re all very grateful for that.

• Ian was sick again this week, but seemed to get over it pretty quick, thanks to a quick trip to the doctor and one of our best experiences with antibiotcs yet.

• Finally, one of the most bizarre experiences I’ve had with Ian yet… the ice cream truck goes by — and if you’ve visited us in the summer and heard it go by, you’ve heard precisely one song: Popeye the Sailor Man. Over and over again. At any rate… Ian heard the music, looked kind of bewildered for a second, and then, with caveman-like precision, he “bounced” in a hunched position, and began waggling his arms like he was repeatedly putting on an invisible coat. A slight smile, but mostly a look of focus was on his face… he was dancing! If I get this on video tape I’ll share it immediately, I promise.

Attack of the Cousins! (Part V)

And finally… On Sunday we took some goofy pictures and marched down to the park! Thank you to Aunt Melanie and the little ones for making the long trek up from Ohio; we had a blast!

This is about as still as you could get Ian; everybody else behaved themselves just fine. He’s a blur in most of the other shots I tried to take in this setting. See this image larger.

Ian – “You have a lot of teeth, cuz. And how do you hold still like that?” See this image larger.

Near the park entrance, cousin Kaylee and Aunt Melanie pause for a brief photo op, before returning to slides and swings. See this image larger.

Ever try to swing with a kid on your lap and take a picture at the same time? Well, that’s what we have here, I figure I did alright. 😉 See this image larger.

Hard to believe he can climb right up a slide at his age, right? Yet his younger cousin taught him how to do it!!! See this image larger.

And then back down again! Weee! See this image larger.
