October, Part II

Finally it was time for the hayride! That’s one of Ian’s teachers in the background, during the hayride she told me more about Ian opening up socially… Awesome stuff! See this image larger.

All smiles! See this image larger.

It was a little cold though! See this image larger.

We took a lot of pictures, didn’t we? See this image larger.

Finally it was time to pick some apples… One cute little person noticed Daddy taking pictures, can you spot her? See this image larger.

Ian found a good pumpkin, but was not about to wait around to find the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown. See this image larger.

Hi family! See this image larger.

Mommy and Nina followed the hay-riding truck in Mommy’s car so that Mommy could split off and go back to work… it wasn’t a Tuesday, after all! See this image larger.

“Land, spreadin’ out so far and wide!” See this image larger.

I admit to panicking a little when Mommy left… Did I have everything I needed to take care of both kids during a field trip?!? Turned out everything went just fine, in no small part to Mommy packing everything I could need! See this image larger.

Ian got to try on a fireman’s coat. It was heavy. See this image larger.

Here Ian poses in the driver’s seat of a firetruck! He was pretty thrilled! See this image larger.

And then Ian got to ring the bell! See this image larger.

Thanks for checking out the blog… more Nina pics next entry, I promise! See this image larger.

October, Part I

October 2nd, and an important choice had to be made… what to be for Halloween?! In early talks there was a lot of mention of Superman and Spiderman. These are characters Ian can point to in a book, and can name, but otherwise they are people he knows nothing about. See this image larger.

Eventually Buzz Lightyear came up! Winner! See this image larger.

A perfectly sized baby hat has a tendency to slip down and force the eyelids closed until nap. What? Isn’t it my job to say what we’re all thinkin’? No? Oh. See this image larger.

There it is! First toofy! See this image larger.

Still on October 2nd, Nina sits down for a lunch and munches on a menu. Apparently everything must have looked delicious as pictured. See this image larger.

We were at Friday’s with Mr. Brandon and his son Max… we had a great time! See this image larger.

On October 4th, Ian, Melissa and I went on a class field trip despite it being one of Ian’s non-school days. See this image larger.

It was called Klackleville Farms, and everybody was extremely happy to be there. (See, Grandparents, he gives us all that look sometimes.) See this image larger.

The world’s biggest sandbox outside of the Egypt quickly turned Ian’s attitude around. See this image larger.

See? Happy! See this image larger.

If Nina wasn’t doing this, she was sleeping. I asked her to do something photo-worthy like cartwheels, and she kept rolling her eyes at me. I still can’t figure little girls out, I guess. 😉 See this image larger.

Ian hopped in this big fire engine thing and I pushed him through the sandbox, small dump trucks and shovels flew everywhere. I don’t know if I’ve ever heard Ian giggle so much. See this image larger.

We found the train next! See this image larger.

See? Choooooo Chooooo. Work with me here. See this image larger.

A small child could actually climb through the whole train like an obstacle course… here Ian emerges victorious from the engine. See this image larger.

Continued in Part II!

Nina’s Awesome Day

NOTE – This post was originally published on September 30, 2010 at 11:43pm. I’ve moved it so that it falls in line with the rest of the timeline.

I’m interrupting our regularly scheduled update for this present-day update… then we’ll head back to August. (NOTE – This sentence refers to original publishing date, sorry.)

On September 29th, Nina and Mommy went to her last physical therapy session. Nina did very well, she was crawling, and climbed up some stacked 6″ thick mats (seen in the background on the right) like they were steps. Also one of the other kids did well and everybody there clapped their hands. And so Nina joined in! First applause, nine months old! There’s still a few things for us to work on, but overall Nina’s doing great!

Later in the day I joined Mommy and Nina for her follow-up visit to the ENT doctor. He took a peek in both of her ears and down each nostril and gave her the diagnosis of “everything is looking great.” Looks like we’re most of the way through this particular pair of hurdles.

Nina apparently chatted and sang all day for the people at daycare after the doctor’s appointment.

That reminds me, yesterday, September 28th, the caregiver at daycare told me that Ian had had an amazing day of communication, that he had stopped being shy and started asking for help, etc. I swear just the other day I explained to him that shyness can get in the way of some things, and that Daddy could have made a lot more friends in his life if he had been less shy. If this conversation had anything to do with his attempts at school to be less shy, I’m ridiculously proud!

NOTE – This post ends the month of September, we begin October next entry… which means we’re almost caught up!

September, Part VIII

September 25th – Grandma Barb reads a story to Ian. Ian ponders the deeper meanings of “Corduroy.” Believe it was the next day that Grandma Barb and Grandpa Ray headed home. Thanks again for visiting and helping us out! See this image larger.

Sometimes feathery white wings, sometimes little red horns. I think you know what I’m saying here. 😉 See this image larger.

Surprise! See this image larger.

Notes from around this time period, the 26th of September:

Ian – “Kiss me because I like kisses.” (Said just like I typed it, no pausing…)

Ian piloted a spaceship at the landing of our steps, with our feet further up the stairs like real astronauts. That’s pretty awesome for three.

Ian has taken a real interest in space. He begs to watch NASA tv on my iPad which includes some of the most boring stuff there is. He likes watching the one about the International Space Station because it has zero gravity and a rocket that “blastoffted.” He used to ask me to watch a simulator of the space shuttle taking off, and his favorite book lately is puzzle planet, a space adventure that Greg handed down from Jake. I hear a rocket has already been purchased for Christmas, though… Just sayin’.

We discovered ninas first tooth today! (September 26th)

Our trip to the park was pretty horrible on September 28th, thanks to two busloads from an area Christian High School who showed up and beat the heck out of the equipment that is meant for 50 pound kids. See this image larger.

There were casualties. See this image larger.

Nina admires the chaos for a few minutes. See this image larger.

*Let’s get out of here, Daddy.” See this image larger.

Notes for September 28th –

Nina did sign language for more.

Daddy (calmly) – “What do i have to do to get the message across to you, Ian?”
Ian – “Yell at me?”
Daddy feels bad rest of said day.

At the dinner table, I was explaining something that happened earlier in the day to Melissa —
Daddy – “And then we bonked heads… And I yelled because it surprised m-”
Ian – “Excuse me, excuse me…”
Daddy – “… it surprised me and…”
Ian – “Excuse me, Daddy.”
Daddy – “Yes, Ian?”
Ian – “It was an accident and we just bofth need to say sorry to each other.”
Daddy (looking at Mommy) – “Would you listen to him? He’s THREE! Can you believe this kid? (turning to Ian…) You’re right, Ian, Daddy’s sorry.”
Ian – “I’m sorry too.”
Daddy – “I love you, kiddo.”
Ian – “I love you too and I love mommy and Nina… and the kitty.”

The next entry will be another pulled from it’s original publishing date to maintain the timeline, and that will also end our September entries.

September, Part VII

September 23rd, the timeline got pretty messed up in previous entries, I tried to fix it. Somewhere in there I hope I mentioned that Grandma Barn and Grampa Ray flew into town to help us with Ian and meals and whatnot during Nina’s surgery. We’ve had to rely pretty heavily on grandparents, friends, neighbors and more this year… I can’t say thank you enough but that won’t stop me from trying. Thank you! See this image larger.

On this day Nina definitely crawled. No doubt about that one.

Here’s some notes from around this date (September 23rd) that will give you an idea of what has been said recently by our crazy kids:

Nina – “A bah bah!”
Me – “A bah bah!”
Nina – “Dada!”

Ian showed up at the side of our bed two nights ago, standing, but completely asleep – a silhouette of a head and shoulders with a blanket… When we dragged him into our bed he talked incoherently for a few moments, in partial syllables. Much later in the evening he blurted out “those are pictures, those are not videos,” while he was still dreaming… this is something I say to I’m when were looking at pictures on my computer and he wants a photograph to spring into action.

Me – “Ian do you know your street address for the new house?”
Ian – “No.”
Me – “two two four arbor.”
Ian – “two two awbow.”
Me – “two two FOUR.. And it is on arbor.”
Ian – “awbow.”
Me – “arbor.”
Ian – “awbow.”
Me – “What does a pirate say?”
Ian – “Arrrrrrr!”
Me – “What do you say when you are cold?”
Ian – “Burrrrrr.”
Me – “Ok now say both of those together.”
Ian – “Arrrrrrr burr?”
Me – “Perfect.” (proud smile.)

Tv character – “…and I’m still in my pajamas, do you wear pajamas?”
Ian – “Yes!” Ian says excitedly and happily. Then he looks down and realizes he’s in his clothes. Looks a little perplexed and disappointed…. Goes back to watching show.

Grandma Barb – “What do you want for lunch?”
Ian – “PeanutButterNJellyAndAPieceOfCarrotCake!” (remembered from night before)

Words maybe we’d rather he forgot include “bahmma” and “poopy.” I’m not sure what bahmma is but it is more the way he uses it. Example: “You are a bahmma.”

September 25th, Ian helps Mommy with the meal preparation… See this image larger.

A cute shot Grandma Barb snapped of our happy little girl! See this image larger.

Her tongue had been feeling out those gums a whole lot those days and even more when this post was written in October. I bet you can guess why! See this image larger.

Quick everybody roll around on the floor! See this image larger.

Nina’s First Surgery, Part II

NOTE – This post was originally published on September 22, 2010 at 11:09pm. I’ve moved it so that it falls in line with the rest of the timeline.

Here’s some pics from Melissa’s phone!

Daddy and Nina, pre op… note the never-ending march of Daddy’s receding hairline. See this image larger.

Mommy and Nina, pre op See this image larger.

Daddy and Nina, post op. See this image larger.

It is funny listening to her breathe now… you can tell she’s sort of testing out the new plumbing. She’s doing really well… there’s a host of medications that she’s going to have to take going out five days or so — one is twice a day for the next month!

Alright I wanted to spread the good news that Nina is ok, before going back to getting us caught up, prepare for a bunch of daily updates that start back in July! (NOTE – obviously this last note refers to when this post was originally published.)

Nina’s First Surgery, Part I

NOTE – This post was originally published on September 22, 2010 at 8:40pm. I’ve moved it so that it falls in line with the rest of the timeline.

Here’s some quick pics of little girl Nina’s first adventure in the land of surgical procedures! You might see this post somewhere down the line again because I’m going to try to get us caught up and then file this one in the correct place chronologically. Also, this is just the pictures from my phone, not the pictures from Melissa’s. More coming soon!

September 21st, Mommy and Nina cuddle previous to the procedure… at this point we’re in the 2nd waiting room of a total of 4 waiting rooms throughout the procedure. I’m not kidding. See this image larger.

Just before anesthesia, little girl hasn’t had anything to eat since 3:30am and this is at 10:08am… still she somehow manages to find the ability to sleep. Here we’re in the third waiting room. In the fourth, they give you a number that corresponds to your child, and you watch her status change on a TV screen. It is like a cross between purgatory, the waiting room for a car mechanic, and waiting for a plane to land. See this image larger.

The parent has to “X” which nostril is the correct one, and the doctor initializes said nostril. This made me nervous. See this image larger.

After the procedure, Nina collapses into Mommy’s arms, content in that way alone. Here we’re waiting in the wrong room because they have not admitted us yet. We ended up waiting for 3 hours or so. See this image larger.

They have to scan her ankle bracelet whenever they give her certain meds. Now we’re groceries, I guess. This is our final room. Once we got here everything was awesome – people waited on us hand and foot! See this image larger.

A close-up of the battle-scarred wee one. She continues to tough through her pain. See this image larger.

Best I could do while holding the phone myself. Melissa has some nice pics on her phone. See this image larger.

This morning, the Princess returns to her castle! All is well! Thank you all for your prayers and thoughts — special thanks to Grandma Barb for watching Ian and taking care of us! See this image larger.

September, Part VI

I made a note back in the entry “September, Part IV” in self-congratulations… that was our blog’s 500th post!!! Can you believe it?

September 15th, Seth loves the new house. Sometimes I think he’d rather send the kids off to college a little early, but the house, he loves. See this image larger.

Same day, I think I have some video of this as well, but Nina really knows how to handle a book. See this image larger.

September 16th, looking off to the east of our house in the back, no less than 20 wild turkeys swarmed around a neighbor’s fence. They ended up inside of there, pretty confused… the fence has since been patched. See this image larger.

September 18th, Nina shows off her arm strength… See this image larger.

Little girl continues to improve on all fronts, and we couldn’t be happier! Keep going, Nina! See this image larger.

The next two entries will be about Nina’s surgery… they are entries I posted a long time ago that will be re-ordered so that all of this makes some kind of sense.

September, Part V

BONUS VIDEO! Moments later, Ian and I play a game where I scare him and he throws woodchips at me. (This is a recreation of the first time it happened. A bit from that park not covered in the videos: Ian and I used these digging toys that are set up like steam-shovels, to excavate dirt. I’d ask if mommy had arrived, he’d spin around, I’d throw a quarter into the newly excavated hole, and he’d turn back around and squeal with glee at the supposedly unearthed treasure.

BONUS VIDEO! September 14th, Ian waters plants for Mommy and considers squirting us both. I got to play the “pinch the hose closed” game with him, and surprisingly he didn’t actually look directly down the end of the hose. Smarter than I thought! This is also the day we found a genuine stick bug in a plant in the backyard. If you don’t know what that is, it is a bug that looks exactly like a stick. Hence the name. Click here to see the video!

September, Part IV

THIS IS POST #500!!!!

On September 11th, Nina tried applesauce

Notes for September 12th:

Nina got done feeding off of mommy today and said “I’m aww dun.” Normally I’d call that pretty impossible, but I heard it and looked over at Melissa with my eyebrows up, and Melissa said did she just say… And then together Melissa and I said at the same time “I’m all done?”

Nina also waved hello a few times.

Nina may or may not have said dada.

Two days ago she may have done the sign language for more.

September 12th – Ladies and gentlemen, some of the best pictures that exist of my lovely wife and two beautiful children. I declare this one pretty awesome. See this image larger.

Although Nina looks cute as a button in this one, peeking through Mommy’s feeding cover! See this image larger.

Taken on the front porch of the new abode, of course! See this image larger.

Later that same day, Ian gives Colonial Sanders a run for his money. See this image larger.

Our ice cream parlor in town has taken the magic of blue moon and added different colored chunks of cookie dough. Take sugar, add sugar, swirl. Delicious! See this image larger.
