Another nice shot from Grampa Dave shows some of the casualties of Christmas morning… Private Christmas Wrap, we hardly knew ye! Captain Orange Astronaut, that one small step for man must have been more like a giant leap! See this image larger.

Mommy fawns over an awesome little denim coat for Nina! That’s going to look so cute! See this image larger.

December 18th, and we had an early visit from Santa, as well as Grampa Dave and Grandma Marcia! And Nina had a visit from something that made her not feel very good. She was throwing up that morning.

Video
Click here to watch a video of the Ian finding presents under the tree! We DID get a visit from Santa!!! If you listen carefully you can hear Ian asking Mommy to hold the handrail on the way down the stairs, he says “Who lefted those?” and “Who gave us those?” (He was pretty sure that Grampa Dave and Grandma Marcia dropped off those presents, but we explained that they hadn’t quite arrived yet! Shortly thereafter they pulled up to the house, but I want to mention that Ian was a VERY good boy and patiently waited. He may have been busy eating cinnamon buns though, not sure!)

It was time to open presents, and Ian was excited and happy to tear into things! See this image larger.

Some cool band-aids! See this image larger.

A cool mini snow globe that glowed many different colors! It even said “I-A-N” on it! He ran that puppy out of batteries in one day! See this image larger.

Bristle Blox were a big hit, and Ian began engineering some fun stuff right out of the package! See this image larger.

I may have mentioned Nina wasn’t feeling well, poor little girl! *Ungh, I said ‘no pictures,’ Daddy.* See this image larger.

More soon!

Hospital Week, Epilogue

Finally through the week, and ready to start celebrating Christmas, right after this entry…

December 16th, Ian’s Christmas party. He got “Where the Wild Things Are” and that’s about all there is to tell about that. See this image larger.

December 17th, time for another Nina fashion show! See this image larger.

Presently, in 2011

Hi! Just wanted to let you know that presently Nina and Ian are a little sick but getting over it, we think. It was barf-o-rama over here for a few nights, though.

Nina had her 12 month “well visit” at the doctor (curiously just before she got sick) and was deemed a healthy little girl. We’re keeping an eye on her weight, which is just a tiny bit under where we’d like it — and also on her neck muscles. She got 5 pokies and cried right out of the gate this time.

On Sunday Ian and I went outside to take down the Christmas lights, and I dragged him around the house on a sled. We had a lot of fun, and Ian was a good helper.

One of the funny things that happened after we got back from Florida is that I realized I had a full 16 GB card on my camera — and I couldn’t easily fit that on my computer, which already has 22,000 pictures of the kids on it. (You think I’m exaggerating, but I’m not.) Looking into some options there, but the Florida trip may be slightly delayed in terms of appearance on the blog while I figure out what needs to come off my drive.

December 13th, Nina knows that someday she gets to challenge Ian for position on the couch… for now she mostly gets Ian’s foot, although we’re trying to correct this. See this image larger.

Ian using his excellent imagination… take a parking ramp and an airplane and you’ve got a pretty awesome space shuttle! See this image larger.

December 15th, we’re eating at Panera and Nina has made some friends with the table behind her. See this image larger.

Where’d they go? See this image larger.

*Say, I’d like some of that yogurt.* See this image larger.

Click here to see the kids at the restaurant — always good to pull out a gadget in the middle of dinner, I say. Wait, I just checked with somebody, not always good, turns out.

This may look like a threat, but it never left his hand, trust me. See this image larger.

Still December 11th, here’s some cute shots of Nina! See this image larger.

Mommy and Ian put the finishing touches on the tree… it’s an “actibity.” See this image larger.

Either this takes enough focus to crease Ian’s brow, or he doesn’t like being touched by the needles, not sure which. See this image larger.

Hospital Week, Part III

December 8th, and now Nina’s got Nina’s hat on. See this image larger.

I think it might be a bit big. See this image larger.

Now I didn’t mention this in Part II, but my brand new camera let me down that night, mostly because of a card issue that I have since resolved… I ended up missing a song, and this upset me greatly. Well the good news is that on December 9th, Ian gave me a repeat performance. Keep an eye on Nina in the background of this video. Click here to watch it!

This may appear to be Christmas, (and in fact I accidentally titled it as such…) but it is not. It is December 10th, and the kids are being shown a lit Christmas tree. Nina missed out on the lighting of the tree ceremony previously. This was a beautiful moment… Nina is looking up at her brother in wonder, and Ian is pointing at the tree. Wish I had a good picture instead of this still from a video.

December 11th, watching the tube, and I assure you that the Backyardigans was nowhere near as suspenseful as it appears to be in this image. See this image larger.

There may or may not have been some slight brotherly/sisterly hitting going on here. See this image larger.

Hitting confirmed. See this image larger.

Somehow we ended up with a half an orchard’s worth of apples in our garage, and the critters had started smelling them, so I invited Ian for a special father/son moment wherein we threw the apples down our hill. See this image larger.

In this shot and the one above it, you can see the apple as a red dot well above Ian’s head. He’s still learning to throw a good pitch. See this image larger.

And we kicked a couple too. See this image larger.

Mommy took pictures, thank you Mommy! See this image larger.

Hospital Week, Part II

I woke up with something on my face that I did not understand. Later in the week I called Uncle Chris, and sent him a picture — he told me to call a doctor and get in as soon as I could — it was probably shingles. I did, and Chris was absolutely spot-on. It is amusing that this is a sort of reanimation of the Chicken Pox virus caused by stress. Amusing because that’s also all it caused was a bunch of stress: I had the kids with me at the doctor, yet he said it was a good idea to stay away from them. One of the two prescriptions was about 200 bucks. And the prospect that I could have given the kids Chicken Pox (Nina in particular) was frightening. So yeah, stress! (I owe Uncle Chris for helping me catch this issue with such expediency! The kids never did catch it from me, thanks to him!) After I got through the meds I was prescribed, my face broke out about the same as when I was a teenager, my scalp started more or less shedding, but is looking better yet still healing as I write this now. Excuse this long caption, I’m trying not to make this about me by dragging it into more entries than it already has appeared. See this image larger.

Our friends Elena and Scott took the kids for me on one of the days of “Hospital Week” thanks to an urgent email from Mommy. This helped me scrape ahead on my deadlines. Elena baked cookies and here Ian prepares to enjoy one. She has some great pics of the kids, if I remember correctly. I’ll need to get ahold of those. See this image larger.

Ian makes a fashion statement on December 6th, using Nina’s hat. See this image larger.

Nina makes her own fashion statement with a Christmas outfit on December 7th. See this image larger.

If you see Nina with any kind of hat or shoes on in a picture, it means the photographer has a light-speed finger on the camera shutter trigger, believe me. She’ll whip those things off faster than you can say “cheese!” See this image larger.

Wondering where we were? It was Ian’s (Daycare’s) Christmas program! He was an angel on-stage, which was awesome… because otherwise, not so much. See this image larger.

That’s Elena holding Nina, we owe her and Scott many thanks for watching the kids. See this image larger.

Nina’s got her hat on again, but not for long I bet! Where’d those shoes go? Gone! See this image larger.

Elena’s daughter Rowen goes to the same daycare as Ian, she’s a class older than the one he’s in, I think. See this image larger.

Yup, he can be a stinker when he wants to be! See this image larger.

I don’t know who the little blonde haired girl is, but I don’t think Ian does either. That reminds me, last time we were at Playworld, Ian “met his best friend” and didn’t want to leave because of him. He’d never met the kid before, so it was pretty funny. See this image larger.

There’s my sweet kid! See this image larger.

Hospital Week, Part I

So this was the week where things started to get a little crazy. I accepted a project that was pretty much made to put me back on track — the loss of a client had sent my self-confidence into a temporary tailspin, and it was simple and fun enough that I figured I could get it done. I had estimated I’d have time to mess with projects after the kids went down for the night. However this also happened to be the week that Melissa was away taking care of the DeVos Children’s Hospital opening, and I didn’t realize just how draining being Mr. Mom and Mr. Dad could be. I stressed myself out, could only rest (as opposed to work or play) at night, and didn’t give myself time to “vent.” The kids handled it all like champs, even as their parents entered into the frenzy.

Here’s Nina having a great time. Check out those teeth on top! You might need to click the link to the right to see the image larger… See this image larger.

Consider what he’s been through. Nina’s a trooper, but she’s known nothing but fight since she was born. Ian knew a paradise where he was the center of all attention – and has had to cope with having to share every aspect of his life. He’s been amazing. See this image larger.

It helps that he has a pretty good sense of humor developing. See this image larger.

A whirling galaxy of hair on Nina’s noggin. See this image larger.

Yep, we were just talking about you, cutie! See this image larger.

Nina gets the patented “George Washington” powdered-wig (or “Flying Nun”) look from an inverted diaper! See this image larger.

*That was fun, Daddy!* See this image larger.

Love these kids! See this image larger.

*Ian… stop trying to scare your sister, please.* See this image larger.

Ian pointed out that the little red symbol on this sign means “Do Not Enter.” I was so proud of him I made him pause for a photo. He smiled brightly and I said “Not this time… look angry and hold your hand out like ‘STOP!!!'” See this image larger.

Click here to get a very brief tour of the Children’s Hospital. On the 4th Ian, Nina and I went down to see what Mommy had been up to, and got the full tour. What you’ll be seeing in this video is the lobby, then the route from the main elevator to the family waiting area. Next you’ll see the anesthesia area, the initial after-surgery holding area, and finally the true recovery area where there are fold out beds for parents, etc.
