Boys Will Be Boys

thumbs up
Today we were treated to quite a show by our little one-to-be… He gave us a thumbs up (see picture above,) yawned, hiccuped, jiggled all over the place and showed us how he can kick Melissa’s bladder like Mike Tyson beating the crap out of a punching bag. As if this behavior wasn’t enough to make it evident, we were also shown enough anatomy that we can say with some authority that he is a boy.

I wanted to put some video up here, but they would not let us videotape it. Normally I’d understand that liability and whatever else can be an issue, but I’m curious as to why my sister-in-law is able to purchase her own DVD of her ultrasound. Depends on the hospital apparently!

Here is an additional image. You can make out his nose (which looks more like Melissa’s to me already…) pointing to the upper right and the general shape of his noggin. My very cool neighbor Susan told me that when you see a baby you immediately know what to name it… I told Melissa that these recent images lead me to believe that “Squishy” would be fitting.

Half Way There

20 weeks and counting! That means we have crossed the half way point, and all is still going well. Next big milestone is the ultrasound to find out the sex of the baby. Stay tuned…

Outy

Here’s a little progress report for all y’all. Everything’s looking good so far!

Thumbs of Steel

We had my sister-in-law (Melissa’s sister) Melanie and our nephew Connor over for a few days last week, and we all had a blast. We went all over town together and got to see many of Grand Rapids’ greatest sites… but imagine my surprise (and pride!) when my nephew figured out how to play a race car game at the age of 4.

Here’s a pic of me taking a break from mowing the lawn (nice clothes, D :-\) to get a couple laps in against the inevitable winner, Connor!

Is he giving us a cheesy thumbs up? Or showing off his race car thumbs of steel? You decide!

More energy on the way…

I have officially crossed the threshold into the second trimester. A big milestone according to the pregnancy books, but I feel pretty much the same. I am looking forward to the big energy boost everyone keeps promising in this trimester, but I am also not holding my breath waiting for something that may never come.

Overall, I’m feeling quite well and can’t complain about how this pregnancy is going so far. Just trying to take one day at a time and enjoy all the sensations — good, bad or otherwise.

Current reading list:

Having Faith: An Ecologist’s Journey to Motherhood; Sandra Steingraber
One of my all time favorite books, that I’ve read over and over. Here’s an excerpt from the book jacket: “… looks at the environmental hazards that now threaten pregnant and breastfeeding women, and examines the effects these toxins can have on a child. Having Faith makes the metamorphosis of a few cells into a baby astonishingly vivid, and the dangers to the continuation of healthy human reproduction urgently real.

The Doula Advantage; Rachel Gurevich
About half way through the book now. interesting research/statistics presented.

A New Addition (kinda)

We spent the weekend working our butts off, and long last have a third bedroom. Doesn’t seem like that would have much to do with a baby, does it? Well, the good news is that the room that was perviously a guest room has been emptied of gigantic man-sized stuff and replaced with honey-I-shrunk-the-furniture sized bits. Read: Nursery.

Our cat loves the window in the new guest bedroom, which is great, because he’s not allowed in the nursery! (Unless he can learn to change diapers, in which case he is more than
welcome.)

doomp-doomp doomp-doomp

The doctor moved the wand around on Melissa’s belly and warned us “Now usually we find the mom’s first…” But her eyes lit slightly as a persistent beat drummed through the device’s speakers. “… or sometimes not! That’s the baby’s!”

A grin split from ear-to-ear on our faces as Melissa and I glanced at each other briefly, and the realization hit home: Somebody’s in there.

I tried to record the experience of hearing our baby’s heartbeat the first time, but in my happiness managed to confuse the green “pause” icon with the red “record” icon and not commit a thing to tape. Why the good folks at Sony would think green means stop and red means go, I have no idea. I’ll get it next time, however.

The doctor also said that next time she’d let me try to find the heartbeat, and issued this like a challenge. Tish! Has my video game expertise not proceeded me, Doctor?
