Presently: Nina In and Out of the E.R.

Nina ended up in the ER on Friday July 9th, but was not admitted to the Children’s Hospital. She had been congested and coughing for a few weeks but whenever we talked about calling the doctor, she’d suddenly be fine. That particular day, daycare called Melissa and told her that Nina was having difficulty breathing. Turns out she’s pretty much alright, but potentially could have asthma in her growing portfolio of issues.

Melissa wrote up this update on Nina’s “care page” which sums it up very nicely… although I will throw in that I also went to the ER with Melissa and Nina, because I did.

On Friday July 9, I received a call from Nina’s daycare in the early afternoon saying she seemed to be having difficulty breathing, was coughing quite a bit and had been vomiting up mucus. Nina has been very congested for about two weeks and has had daily spells of coughing/choking and occasional dry heaving–trying to get rid of all the mucus that is draining down her throat–so I wasn’t that surprised by this call, but was very concerned about the fact that she was having difficulty breathing. I’ve almost taken Nina to the ER about half a dozen times in the past two weeks, but it seems that every time I get ready to leave, Nina starts coo-ing and makes me think she’s okay. However, since the daycare staff thought she was having difficulty breathing, I decided now was the time to take her in and find out what was going on.

The visit to Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital’s emergency department was excellent (once again) and definitely worth the trip. Our wait times for everything were much longer this time around, but I was actually thankful for that. I kept thinking that Nina must be doing okay or the staff would have been moving faster. It certainly made the wait times easier to deal with knowing/hoping that Nina wouldn’t have to be admitted this time around.

Nina had a chest x-ray taken, which ruled out pneumonia, and was given a breathing treatment while there. The respiratory therapist who was working in the ER on Friday was one of the therapists who had worked with Nina when she was hospitalized back in February. He is very good with kids and it was nice to see him again. Sadly, Nina doesn’t like the breathing treatments and cried/wriggled during the whole treatment. The physician who examined Nina concluded that she would need daily breathing treatments for at least a month, so it’s going to be fun doing those at home until Nina gets more comfortable with them.

Bottom line: Nina was diagnosed with reactive airway disease. The physician wrote her a prescription for a nebulizer to use at home with two medicines–Pulmicort (once daily for a month) and albuterol (every 4-6 hours as needed). The medical device company was able to bring the nebulizer out to us Friday night and Nina had her first breathing treatment at home on Saturday night (sadly she cried through that whole treatment too). Nina was also prescribed Zyrtec last week at her 6 month “well” child check-up, so she will continue taking that daily as well. We will follow up with our primary care physician on Monday for next steps. Nina also goes back to Mary Free Bed on Tuesday to repeat her head scan. If there hasn’t been any/much improvement to her flat spot and overall head shape, then she will be fitted for a helmet. (Lots going on!)

Please continue to keep Nina in your thoughts and prayers. All of these challenges are fairly minor and “fairly” manageable, but it does seem like the list of health issues continues to grow and compound. She’s definitely a fighter, but we’re hoping she gets a break from all this soon. It’s just so much for our precious little 6 month old to have to deal with.

May Trip to Fawn Island, Part I

I am praying that our May excursion isn’t our only trip up to the Island this year! Things are so busy right now it is looking like it’ll be August before we can even attempt trip #2! Anyway, here’s some pictures!

May 29th – Arrival at the island! This is Nina’s first trip! Ian looks sad, but I’m not always willing to bribe him with candy for a smile. See this image larger.

And I love you, little girl! See this image larger.

*Hi Gramma Marcia!* See this image larger.

*Hi Grampa Dave!* See this image larger.

Grampa Dave has been framed! See this image larger.

Look at the satisfaction in that little smile… I don’t think wild horses could tear Ian away from this lap and book. See this image larger.

This shot originally came in quite dark, and I didn’t think much of it until I lightened it up, and could really see everybody’s faces. So cute! See this image larger.

*cough cough* (Important to catch all these moments, don’t you think?) See this image larger.

More May

May 13th – Ian grabs a gummy bear sundae from Coldstone as another reward for potty training perfection! See this image larger.

May 18th – After a long winter Ian asked me to build him a boat, as he was jonsing for a trip up to Fawn Island to see Grandpa Dave and Grandma Marcia… and a real boat ride! See this image larger.

The steering wheel came from a truck toy off the port bow, and an ottoman made up the captain’s chair! See this image larger.

This could never replace the real thing, but judging by that grin, Ian and I had come up with a pretty good temporary solution. Nina can be seen in her dingy, to starboard.See this image larger.

May 25th – This is really only the second time in his life that he has fallen asleep at the table. I got a nice video of this as well as he conked out. See this image larger.

May Continues…

May 8th – Surprise! See this image larger.

I read on the internet that if you simply turn your normal lens around on an SLR style camera, you can get a cheap macro lens. This is Nina’s eye up-close and personal! See this image larger.

And here’s Nina at a decidedly more comfortable distance. See this image larger.

May 9th… here’s what Nina’s mouth looks like without a zooey in it! See this image larger.

And in goes the thumb! See this image larger.

Ian’s first viewing of “Jaws” did not go as planned. (I’m kidding.) See this image larger.

May 10th – A rare-ish picture of Nina and Daddy! See this image larger.

May 12th – Ian is rewarded with candy for good bathroom etiquette… blue M&M’s in this case, which gave him this creepy azure grin! See this image larger.

And then we brushed his teeth! See this image larger.

Nina bids you adieu for now. See this image larger.

Finally, Back to Some Pictures

Time has not been on my side lately. Trying to sell this house, trying to find a new house, deadlines magically syncing up to some of our most involving “normal life” deadlines, baptism stuff… and totally dumb random explosions have set my entire world upside-down. So this is me turning back the clock to when we last left off, picture-wise, and catching us up to present. (Note that I did write another entry, just below this one, talking a little bit about our old house here — not an important read, but it does set us up for what will happen in just a few weeks, if God’s hand continues to play a part and all the stars align. More on that soon.)

Without further ado…

Two months ago, to the day… May 5th, 2010. Those of you who saw the really nice picture of Nina after a bath (the same one that was later to be featured on the big screen at her Baptism…) the following pictures took place the next day.

Chillin’ out in one of those u-shaped pillows that is supposed to help during breast-feeding.See this image larger.

*We’re done with pictures here, Daddy. GET OUT.* See this image larger.

It is like a JCPenny photo-studio shot. See this image larger.

Nina can be such a peaceful sleeper. Can be. See this image larger.

So this was also the day that Nina first started daycare! I snapped this shot while Melissa entered in a pass-code and I wrangled Ian. It was also the day that Ian first asked to be put in big-boy underpants, and pretty much never looked back. See this image larger.

139 Highlander Drive

139 Highlander is one closing (and just under a month) away from being a thing of our past now, and it is hard to swallow. Walking around I find it difficult to conceive of letting go of a place that held so many beautiful memories. The many adjustments we’ve made for Seth… thinking back to the very first days we moved in here. The difficulties we’ve had – like me getting laid off, and not knowing what was going to happen next. And oh so many wonderful, positive things. This will always be the house I remember when I think of “baby” Ian. His first steps. The way he’d run around and around. His first words. His proud shouts of accomplishment.

Of the actual building, I’d say more than anything that this house has had a tendency to be focused and intimate. So if the person you want is somewhere in the house, you have but to lightly call for them, and you could find them very quickly. Also if Ian wanted to leap off of the fifth step on the stairwell, everybody in the office, kitchen, dining room and living room would be able to scream “STOP!!!!” before he did so. Good, right? The flip side of that is that if Ian just wanted to sing, or bang a drum… if Melissa wanted to watch TV, or I wanted to jam my music during a deadline crunch… or if Nina wanted to cry all night… none of that is possible in this house without everybody experiencing it.

Nina has changed everything dramatically. She can’t help it, things have just shifted away from what they were. In a way I think it is fitting to say good-bye to the house that represents our lives before two kids, and embrace a new era. If you happen to have a glass handy, please raise it and wish us good luck.

Happy Half-a-Birthday, Nina!

It is Nina’s 6-month birthday today! All kinds of changes coming up soon… first and foremost, somebody gets some rice cereal this weekend!!! (But no cake, not yet!)

Reminder to self – TAKE A PICTURE TODAY.

Weird Update

We’re fine, the Rockford area tornado did not hit us. Nor did it ever really touch down, I’m guessing.

Ian correctly used the word “contraption” in a sentence today.

Nina rolled over from back to front for the first time today.

We put an offer in on a house today.

She Can Stand!!!

That’s what I wrote to Melissa in a text message today about Nina… “She can stand!!!” Melissa asked for clarification, and I explained – ” I’m just holding her from tipping. She can stand for about 15 seconds!! Her little legs lock and she’s fairly stable, even! I guess that’s maybe no different than when she’s in the exersaucer?” The exersaucer is like a pair of underpants in the middle of a plastic doughnut full of toys. The child can spin and sort of stand in it…

But when Melissa came home I showed her what I was talking about. I picked Nina up and transferred my grip to her hands. And she stood there, like a human letter “T” – arms stretched wide, and stance locked fairly solid. And Melissa was as surprised, because this was indeed a major step forward, and happened very suddenly.

Earlier today I was changing her diaper, and just as I completed the task, Nina said “Ah-kee!” And it sounded for all the world (particularly in cadence and conversational tone) like “All clean!” I immediately dismissed this as a trick of my ears or something, but wanted to mention it here in case Wednesday morning she says something like “I don’t wanna go to school.”

About three days ago I saw her distinctly pass a pacifier from her right hand, to her left, like it was something she’s done a thousand times before.

House news: Our house is the final stretch… it is “sold” in every sense of the word other than actual ownership, and some signatures. Updates to the blog are going to come slowly and late, because we’re now up against a new enemy – time. We’ve got about 35 days to find a new home and move into it – or else we get to move into some kind of rental. We just can’t find anything that we like at the moment – at least not without getting into a mortgage that we’d hate.
